Car stereo wiring

I took a tiny step towards radio installation, but I'm now stumped in that I don't even know what to search for to get help.

I have 20 wires here

And 10 wires here

In the second photo, the four wires wrapped with the green tag come from the passenger side; the other six from the drivers side.
I have worked out the aerial input/plug, not in photo.

?????????!!

Have you resolved this?

I could explain but it would be a long and difficult post.

In brief ....
I reckon on the car side .......the 3 wires into the block connector are the switched live, the permanant live and the earth. The 4 from the left are speaker cables and the other cables from right might be speaker cables but could be for electric aerial or speakers or something else
On the radio side ...... the wires to yellow connector are probably all speaker cables. Probably ignore the middle connector and wires. Switched live, permanent live and earth will be on left connector.

....Probably

Too much to explain

Get the power wires connected then the speakers can be worked out via trial and error.

Googling "car radio wiring colours" throws up a few sites. "car wiring radio loom" would be another. Ideally putting in the car make would help.

Thanks for trying, I think my brain is just having a "nope" day Embarassed

S-reg Ford escort.

I've found some really detailed wiring diagrams; too detailed to know what I'm looking at.

I've emailed a local audio fitting chappie.... Rolling Eyes

The easiest way to sort this is to buy a connector block which will suit your car and the radio. These are available from Halfords and other car audio places for around 8.

If you are determined to DIY then a Haynes manual for the vehicle will give you the wiring detail for the car, and Google should provide the wiring for the radio unit.

[Stereo?]

And 10 wires here

[Car?].

First thing is work out what's redundant: there will be two wires for each speaker, the stereo will probably have capacity for at least four speakers: I'd guess that's the yellow connector.
They're usually paired in similar colours: (eg red&white, red&black).
If all else fails, you could unscrew the speakers from the car to see the colours at that end.

Then you're just looking for live power, ignition power and earth... anything else is probably more or less optional.

How are you getting on with it today NMG?

SG - today's victory has been getting out of bed and washing up... Confused Would a connector block tell me which ones go where? I've got the little widgets that let you join together the wire ends.

HL - moment of clarity, thank you, of course I'm "missing" some speakers with it being a van.

stumbling goat
NMG,

well done in your achievements thus far today Smile

Those little widgets, connector blocks, are good enough for the job, but is there enough room for a strip of them in the cavity behind the radio in the van? Some vehicles have a cage to slide a radio in and the blocks may hinder fitting?

The pre-wired audio connector blocks from Halfords and others simply connect to the back of the radio and to the block attached to the car/van wiring loom. Does away with the need for the little strips that you have. Simply plug them in to each other and slide the unit in to the cage or aperture.

If you are determined to DIY then as has been said you will need to find out what cable does what?

There isn't a block attached to the car end though, just bare wires. That's what stumped me - I was expecting to try out a couple of different plug combinations and crack it. stumbling goat
AH!

And finally for today:

Cut and pasted from another site (http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/10896-ford-escort-1998-mk6-stereo-wiring-loom/), so no guarantees!

AFTER A FEW DAYS OF DICKING AROUND AFTER HAVING CUT MY FORD CONECTOR BLOCKS OFF OF MY STEREO WIRING LOOM, IVE USED A VOLT - METER TO FIGURE OUT EACH INDIVIDUAL COLOR SO NOBODY ELSE HAS THE PROBLEM I HAD WHEN IT CAME TO WIRING A NON FORD HEAD UNIT UP. OK HERE GOES ON MY ESCORT I HAD TWO LOOMS (SPEAKERS, AND POWER / EARTH) YOU'LL HAVE 3 BLACK AND ORANGE WIRES (ONE THICK AND THE REST THIN), TWO BLACK AND GREEN (ONE THICKER THAN THE OTHER) AND A YELLOW AND GREEN. THE TWO BLACK / GREEN ARE EARTH CABLES, SO WIRE THEM UP FIRST! THE THICKEST ORANGE/BLACK CABLE IS YOUR CONSTANT (LIVE / MEMORY) AND FINALLY YOUR YELLOW/GREEN CABLE IS YOUR SWITCHED POWER SOURCE (IGNITION!)

Well now I'm even more confused. Found another picture which sowed what was what at the back of the stereo. Decided to have a go while I had a tenuous grasp on it all.

So, it works (even found a CD in the 2nd hand stereo!), CD spins, radio scrolls.

Not a note of sound from either speaker. And those are the colours that match perfectly!

It doesn't pick up radio (duff antenna??).

Test the speakers with a known audio source. Nick
Or maybe there's a reason it was being got rid of. NorthernMonkeyGirl
Or maybe there's a reason it was being got rid of.

The van or the stereo? Laughing

I'm inclined to furtle inside the doors tomorrow and check that there are speakers present...
